There
is another version with the identical lines apart from the
word “SPENT” which is replaced with “LOST”- making
no significant changes to the context of the poem. There are
some versions of the poem, which are adapted to suit pub
conditions in which the son continues his speech saying that
one bad cart and a half-blind horse have still left in the
house but he will sell them too in order to have another
drink. Of course, the previous part of the poem in which the
son comforts his mother stands out from the amended part,
dedicated to the drunken guests who are ready to drink the
last dime. |
